Rumour has it that on Sunday, May 13, 2017 Donald Trump was issued a “Sealed Grand Jury Indictment” for a felony. The indictment is for President Trump, as an individual. There is no word as to what the felony charge is, as of yet.
Potential outcome – Impeachment:
While this story is still only a rumour, the possible indictment is being seen as the early groundwork for a case for impeachment. The President of the United States is not susceptible to the charges of the indictment while in office. There is a long way to go for a potential full impeachment. It would be extraordinarily premature to suppose that, were the indictment real, the President would be impeached given that both the House and the Senate are currently controlled by a Republican majority.
What is a Sealed Indictment?
According to US Legal
An indictment is a formal accusation of a felony, issued by a grand jury based upon a proposed charge, witnesses’ testimony and other evidence presented by the public prosecutor (District Attorney). It is the grand jury’s determination that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial voted by a grand jury. In order to issue an indictment, the grand jury doesn’t make a determination of guilt, but only the probability that a crime was committed, that the accused person did it and that he/she should be tried. District Attorneys do not present a full case to the grand jury, but often only introduce key facts sufficient to show the probability that the accused committed a crime.
